Dupuytren’s Disease
Dupuytren’s disease, sometimes called Dupuytren’s contracture or palmar fibromatosis, affects an estimated 200,000 people each year. This hand deformity generally takes many years to develop, and mainly affects the area of the ring finger and pinky. A layer of tissue under the skin of the hand (called the fascia) may begin to harden and thicken, creating a knot-like texture in the palm area. Eventually, the changing of this tissue can pull one or more fingers into a permanently bent position. While it is not considered serious or life-threatening, Dupuytren’s can affect your ability to perform daily activities like chopping, gripping, or shaking someone’s hand. Dr. Richards can help with diagnosis and treatment of Dupuytren's Disease in the Ogden Area.
Symptoms of this disease appear gradually, and many people may not realize that something is wrong until they can no longer move their fingers as they could before. You may notice:
- Lump or knots of tissue in your palm
- Skin of your palm may look puckered or dimpled
- You may not be able to fully straighten one or more fingers
Generally, there is no pain reported in this condition, but only mild discomfort while attempting things like putting the palm flat on a table, taking hands in and out of pockets, and putting on gloves.
Currently, the cause of Dupuytren’s is unknown, but it most commonly affects men, those over the age of 40, and those of European descent. There are no indications that prior injury or stress to the area increase the risk of developing this disease. Depending on the severity of the condition, certain treatment options may be available to you, but only a qualified doctor like Dr. Richards in Ogden can diagnose Dupuytren’s disease and assess your case properly. Some medications, injectables, or surgical treatments we offer in Ogden may help you with Dupuytren’s disease and help you regain function in your affected hand.
